For the Survey assignment, I chose to create a written survey about the dining hall. One morning, I asked students I didn't know and who were leaving the dining hall to fill out a survey about the dining hall. A lot of students provided answers similar to my own opinions on the dining hall. The most typical answers were that the dining hall should be open later, the variety of food available is average or above average, the quality of the food is poor or average, the dining hall staff is good, and the overall dining hall experience is not bad. Hopefully the dining hall experience will be better next year than it was this year.

Private To Public

For this assignment, I decided to take the private action of shaving into a public setting. I performed this action in the lounge of my dorm. While doing this, people who were walking by gave me weird looks and some asked me what I was doing shaving in the lounge. This only took me a few minutes but it was funny to see how people reacted to this event.

Altered States

The two “altered states” I chose to undergo simultaneously were wearing socks over both hands and squinting my eyes. I maintained both states simultaneously for a half hour. At first squinting did not affect me too badly. However, as time passed my eyes began to get tired and it was harder to keep them slightly open. With the socks over my hands it was difficult conducting activities heavily involving the use of my fingers. The first activity I tried with both altered states was using my computer. Not only was it semi difficult to see the screen and what I was doing but also, typing became a problem. The socks made typing difficult because I would hit buttons that I didn’t mean to. Combined with squinting this was an even bigger problem because when I did make a typing mistake, it was not easy to see the buttons. The only thing that made it possible was my memory of where each button was.
The next activity I did was doing my laundry. I had to be more careful when selecting the cycles and such because I did not want to have to pay more money to redo my laundry. By taking things slowly I was able to get the job done without having to start over. Doing laundry with socks over my hands was not difficult because it is not a task heavily involving the use of individual fingers. However, it was quite funny and ironic doing laundry with socks on my hands.
If I were to only squint my eyes, both tasks would have been a little easier than when performing with two altered states. It would still have been difficult to read what was on the computer screen, though. If I were to only wear socks on my hands, typing would still have been a problem but I could still manage doing laundry in about the same amount of time if I had no socks on my hands.
Each altered state was different from the other in that they each affected me in different ways. The squinting affected my vision negatively, while the socks affected the use of my hands negatively. Doing this activity makes me enjoy having good vision and the use of all my body parts. Life would just not be as enjoyable any other way.

Extra Credit: Pulp Fiction

Story Questions...

-The story is set in Los Angeles

-The story is started by Pumpkin and Honey Bunny holding up the diner.

-The main characters are Vincent Vega and Jules although there are many other characters like Butch who are integral to the plot

-The main conflict that they face is that they are hitmen and live a dangerous lifestyle where one false move could either kill them or put them in the dog house with their notorious employer Marsellus Wallace

-As the story progresses the characters are involved in doing various oddjobs for Marcellus, such as getting the money from Brett (the famous “Royale with Cheese” scene), being sent to kill Butch, and killing Marvin.

-The outcome of the conflict is a shootout in a diner which cements Jules’ retirement as a hitman and signals the start of his “new life” as he lets the robbers leave.

-The ultimate impact of the conflict is that Jules retires and Vincent needs to find a new partner after getting the briefcase to finish the job.

-The major conflict in the story is set up in the beginning of the movie, when the audience finds out that these men are hitmen

-The major conflict in the story takes place after the hold-up scene with "Pumpkin" and "Honey Bunny" afterwhich the story follows the characters Vincent, Jules, Butch, etc.

-The main characters are introduced after the hold-up scene and follows the stories of Vincent, Jules, Butch, and many other characters

-The story unravels by following the lives of several characters and the audience discovers the characters are all connected by certain events that occur in the movie

-The major conflict is set up to propel the movie to its conclusion after Vincent and Jules kill two men at Brett's house. Marvin, their informant, drives them away, but Vincent accidentally shoots him in the face. Having to rid of the mess, they call upon Jimmy for help. They then dispose of the car and decide to go to breakfast afterwards.

-The film resolves most of the major conflicts when Jules and Vincent are eating breakfast at a coffee shop. It is here where Jules decides to retire from his job as a hitman.The audience then sees "Pumpkin" and "Honey Bunny" before they hold-up the coffee shop. Vincent and Jules then put the two to gunpoint and allow the robbers to leave with the stolen money. Jules then is left with a briefcase that is to be returned to Marsellus, finishing his final job.
